The Cathar Country

Between Legends and Ruins

Cathar Country, located in the heart of Occitanie, is a land steeped in history and mystery.
Between the remains of hilltop fortresses and legends that have endured through the centuries, this region offers a glimpse into its medieval past.

The Ruins: Citadels of Vertigo

The Cathar castles, often referred to as the “citadels of vertigo”, dominate the rugged landscapes of the Aude and Ariège regions. Among them, Montségur, perched at 1,207 metres above sea level, was the site of a tragic siege in 1244, where more than 200 Cathars were burned at the stake.

Quéribus, the last Cathar stronghold to fall in 1255, offers breathtaking views over the Corbières. Peyrepertuse, often described as a “celestial city”, impresses with its architecture seamlessly integrated into the cliffside.

Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, these fortresses stand as powerful symbols of the Cathars’ resistance against the crusades launched against them. Today, they remain iconic landmarks of Occitan heritage.

Legends and Mysteries

Cathar Country is also the birthplace of many enduring legends. Montségur is often linked to the quest for the Holy Grail and a hidden treasure, fuelling esoteric fascination since the 19th century.

Rennes-le-Château, with its priest Bérenger Saunière, continues to intrigue visitors with its enigmatic constructions and rumours of hidden riches.

These stories create a unique aura of mystery that attracts researchers, curious travellers and history enthusiasts alike.
